COLORADO LAND CRUISERS

Presidents Notes – July 2000

These past couple of months have been very busy for me. We have logged more than 3,000 miles in my wife’s comfy, ‘cruiser, a Buick LeSabre. As we cruise down the interstate at legal limit plus about 5, listening to a gentle whirr of the A/C, a little wind noise, music that doesn’t have to compete with gear whine, I wonder what it would be like to have power seats in the FJ40, or maybe A/C, then reality sinks in and I realize the FJ40 is probably noisier waiting for the traffic light to change, than the LeSabre is on the interstate. Then I also think that when we celebrated the 4th of July in 1972, when my FJ40 was new, Nixon was still in office. Now we are on our 7th President and much has changed in the automotive and 4WD worlds. Much has changed in the world. Period. But FJ40’s haven’t changed that much over the years. I’m not sure I would want one with power seats, power windows, or even A/C – it just wouldn’t be a FJ40. (maybe A/C would be OK). I think better seats would be nice though, as they wouldn’t change the overall FJ40 experience, only how I ‘interface’ with it, or how I ‘plug’ into it. Lets face it. FJ40’s were designed to be a utility vehicle, not a highway cruiser. They were made to be a cruiser of lesser roads, of byways which are little traveled. And at this they excel. They are time machines, which transport us to places little changed from time long ago. If you want absolute 4WD comfort, start with a FJ80, or later series. And yes, you can bring a FJ40 up close to this level of comfort. Expect to pay big $$,$$$ though. If you are new to 4WD in general, and CLC in particular, find out what you would like to do. Don’t just start ‘modifying’. (Gotta have ‘them big tires’) Rock Crawling isn’t for everyone, and it certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. Find out what trail niche you like best. CLC has several runs scheduled each month. Some are mild and some are wild. If you want to go on a wilder run, but your ride, (or you) isn’t ready, let us know, as there are usually extra seats available in member rigs, for you to tag along. No, to experience a 4WD trail, you don’t have to be the driver. By going along you can experience CLC teamwork and profit from the experienced trail crew, as they help and spot member and visitor rigs through various obstacles.

I came across a small side story in the Denver Post, that the Bureau of Land Management is looking for input so they can do their planning concerning OHV, Off High way Vehicle, use. A meeting is scheduled in Denver July 7th, 1 to 5pm, and in Grand Junction July 20th, 1 to 5pm. The meetings are on a Friday afternoon and a Thursday afternoon, when most of us that pay taxes have to work. The web site does allow written input however, and that might be the best way to share your ideas. The BLM requests input by Aug 31, 2000.
