President's Report  - July 2003

Hey all, another busy month.  The meeting last month was rather small, but we had two guests and one joined.  Please welcome Todd at the next meeting.

On June 14th, the club participated in the annual "Brighten the Sangres” event in Westcliffe.  Andy and Bart were in Andy's truck, Mike and Jill were

in their 4Runner, Vic and Brian were in Vic's FJ40 and I was there with my son Josh.  We all worked the Hermit Lake road along with a Forest Service

Technician.  First we cleaned a campground by picking up trash, re-building fire rings, and staining the picnic tables.  While we were there a reporter

from Canyon Current (a Canon City newspaper) was there and took some pictures for an article.  I have a copy of the article being sent to me for the club to see.  It is also on line at www.canyoncurrent.com.  From the campground we went on up the road and found another camping area that had a lot of downed trees due to an avalanche.  The power of an avalanche is

awesome.  Big trees just snapped off.  We moved the trees out of the roads and used some of them to block off an illegal road in to the camping area.  Vic and Andy had fun dragging trees around.  We then continued up the road to the Hermit Lake trailhead.  Mike, Jill, Josh, and I decided to hike into the lake.  The hike was short, but alot of it was crossing deep snow.  While we hiked into the lake, Andy and Vic continued up the road to see how far they could get.  They got up a ways, but were stopped by an 8-foot snowdrift.  We had a great day and are looking forward to next year. The next club run will be Holy Cross on July 18,19,20.  Vic and Chuck said that they would be heading up Friday morning to get a good campsite.  We will finalize meeting times at the next meeting.  The next meeting will be held on July 15th at 7:30 PM at the Liberty Toyota North location.  Remember we will be voting on changing the meeting time to 7:00 PM in October and keeping the meeting at Liberty Toyota North year round.  See you all at the next meeting.

Happy Trails,
Kendall Carlton

President

Colorado Lane Cruisers gets in the News!!!

Yup, we finally got some press, or at least we sort of got some press.  I checked the Canyon Current web address in Kendall’s report and found an article about the Colorado Lane Cruisers from Colorado Springs, helping with the “Brighten the Sangres” cleanup.  And yes, we were referred to as the “Lane Cruisers”.  How one little letter changes the entire meaning of a story – stuff that’s covered in Reporting 101, get your facts and spellings right!  A “Lane Cruiser” is a grocery-getter or such, and can only compare to a “Land Cruiser” in that both may have 4 wheels.  How disappointing it was to find this error.

Cindy Beaudean Update

Cindy is making great progress in her recovery; from injuries she received in a roll over accident in May while on an outing to 21 road in western Colorado.  She is healing more quickly than the Dr’s expected.  She is now at Penrose Main in Colorado Springs, in room 806.  She would love to hear from you, and her direct line is 776-2283.  If all goes well, Paul reports that she may be able to come home as early as July 10th.  Our prayers continue for your complete recovery, Cindy.

Reynolds Wrap – June 28, 2003

I didn’t receive any details on how the trail run went, but I suspect Chuck, John and Jeff had a good time.

Next Meeting: July 15, 2003

Liberty Toyota North – 7:30pm.  Remember, we are voting to make Liberty Toyota North our year round meeting location.

Run: Holy Cross, July 18, 2003

Holy Cross.  There is but one Holy Cross, and this year CLC has scheduled this run for the weekend of July 18, 19 and 20th.  The meet time is 6:00PM, with a leave time of 6:30PM, from CLC’s West location at the Western station just east of Woodland Park  Plan to have a good time as this is one of CLC’s premier events, and it will be lead by Norm Opperman, who scrapes more 4WD knowledge from under his fingernails than most people ever see.  Newbies need to be alert to collect Norm’s scrapings.  He may even let you have some of the fragrant oil drippings from his way-more-than-stock FJ40.  Or maybe Norm will try out the new Duramax on the trail – you never know.  (Holy Cross trail is rated at 4+ to 5, so your stocker needs to be left at the trailhead.)

Next Run: Iron Chest August 16th & 17th  2003

Iron Chest is near Buena Vista.  The meet time is 7:00AM with a leave time of 7:30AM from CLC’s West location at the Western station just east of Woodland Park.  Mike Taylor is slated as being the trip leader, and once again Mike ties Norm for 4WD experience and ability. And  Mike’s Purple Cruiser is second to none in capability as is Mike’s ability.  Plan on camping out Saturday night for a very enjoyable weekend.  Once again Iron Chest is rated at 4+, so your stocker will be ready for you when you return from the trail to the head parking lot.  Make your plans now to attend this CLC event.
