President's Report  ~ February 2005

February, One month closer to camping weather!  I can’t wait.  CLC has many great trips planned this year, but we still need trail leaders for many.  Check out the schedule and see if there is a trip you plan on making and consider leading it.  This month’s trip is to Reynolds wrap/Eagle rock on Sat. 19.  This should be an interesting “snow” trip, so bring your chains.  January run to Chinaman Gulch was snowy, at least to the meeting point, since that is as far as I made it since I was not feeling well.  I know Ken, Kendal and Paul went and had a good time.  Come to the next meeting and hear more about Kendall’s trip report. See ya all there!

“Remember we’re all in this together, I’m pullin’ for ya!”

Chinaman Gulch – January 29, 2005

The day started out cold and snowing in Woodland Park.    Ken and I left Woodland Park and snow was beginning to stick to the roads.  I was beginning to think that it was going to be a long drive to Chinaman's gulch.  As we cleared Florissant the snow stopped and the roads got much better.  We met Paul at Gunsmoke in Johnson's Village and headed to the trailhead. After airing down we headed off.  No troubles were had with the first obstacle.  We got to the rock pile and there was no snow on it, so we all had a go and made it without too much difficulty.  We stopped for lunch after the rock pile and Brian showed up in his Jeep Wagoneer.  After lunch it was off to Whale Rock.  Since it is in the shade most of the time, there was quite a bit of snow on the rock.  We all tried the middle line, but too No avail.  It was just too icy, had to take the easy side.  On up to the top we went.  We got to the Double Step, there was not any snow on it, but the base was muddy.  This combination of muddy tires and my wheelbase needing to climb the double step at the same time proved to be a bad combination for me.  I tried and tried, but in the end the lack of traction did not allow me to pass.  The shorter wheelbase FJ40 of Ken's and Paul's CJ5 made it look easy.  We got back to Gunsmoke in Johnson's Village around 4pm and headed our separate ways.  It was a fun trip, and the weather was much nicer

than it was in Colorado Springs that day.

Moab, Montrose and Billings Canyon…

This past weekend, Linda and I had an opportunity to spend the weekend in Moab with some very close friends, cousins actually.  Although I was raised in western Colorado, and have been through Moab many times, I had never spent longer than it takes to fill a gas tank or to eat a big frosty.  On this trip, we were along for the ride, and the ride took us to Arches National Monument for an afternoon.  What sights and views!  And the snow on the LaSalle Mountains looked great – never have I seen them so covered.  What does this all have to do with Montrose, you ask?  We were there to attend a weekend marriage conference, and at the conference I met folks from Montrose and Grand Junction.  They had trailered their rigs and spent their free time on the trails.  WoW!  The weather was perfect.  The temperature was in the high 40’s and low 50’s, and it couldn’t have been better.  The days were as clear as they can be.  And after I got beyond the “T” shirts noting that the wearer was identified as a ‘Rock Crawler’, I found a good group of  ‘wheelers, who are ready to lead us, CLC, on our Black Bear run later this year and want to meet us on Marshall Pass, since they haven’t done it yet.  The Montrose group is also ready to take us on the trails in the Montrose area.  All we have to do is give them a call with when we’ll be there.  Now, I’ll bet you are wondering about Billing Canyon, and maybe Bangs Canyon?  The folks from Grand Junction told me where they are.  Cool.  Hint:  The canyons are located about 4 miles from where Kendall’s parents live!  I know I have Kendall’s interest now.  So, guys, next time your wife “suggests” you attend a marriage conference – go with it, and if the destination is Moab, take your rig.

And, oh yes, the seminar was very good too.

It’s more fun in your rig,

Darryl
